tv licence

Options
in febuary i moved out of my parents house and had to get a tv licence so i got the missus to ring up and sort it out-we were paying 26 pound something a month for 6 installments- NO PROBLEM, i thought i would pay this and then pay nothing after that for the other 6 months!!!

in august we had another letter saying they wanted 13 pound a month for the next 12 months so we are paying it, but i got my mrs to ring them up and ask why?- the lady on the other end said its what we agreed- but i cant understand why we have paid an extra 60 pound than everyone else

can anyone else tell me why we are paying more??

thanks in advance

    yeah i dont understand that!
i pay mine quarterly at £35ish
    THANK MEEE:j
  • Everybody paying on monthly direct debit pays their TV licence like this. The first six months you pay for the first years licence. The next six months you pay in advance for the second year's licence. The third six months you pay in arrears for the second year's licence.

Then you pay six months in advance then six months in arrears for each subsequent year's license.
  • Hi there when u first get your TV license on the cash easy scheme u pay for it in 6 month's or 26 week's which is why u payed double aka £26.

Now u continue to make payment's toward's your next tv license , you pay for your next one 6 month's in advance then 6 month's behind so basically u will continue to make those payment's to keep your TV license up to date.

I thought it was a bit crazy but it's how they do it.

    Hope this helped.

    Hi
    your not...
the person on the phone obviously doesn't know there job properly...
when you pay like this you always pay 6 months in advance for next years licence...you will only pay £13 now amonth thats it but every month...unfortunately...so that your half and half...half next years bill and so on and so on...

I couldn't get my head round this either...so...I pay them £36.12 a quarter
    thats once every 3 months...

if the person on the phone was trained properly they would have told you this about your direct debit...

there are also other ways you can pay for your licence without doing it that way...

as I pay for my via DD but quarterly I pay an extra £5.00 for doing it that way...which brings my licence up to £144.50 for the year I am wondering why you are paying £156.00

anyway its normal to pay half this year and the other half next year but forever...

I like how I do it ...it doesn't sound so dawnting...:rotfl:

It's because most people sign up to monthly DDs when a new licence is due. So, as last couple on posts, they provide you with that ... and you pay for the full year, in arrears, over 6 months. Then, at roughly half the previous rate, you pay in advance 6 months for the next one. They send it to you - and you complete the outstanding 6 months with payments in arrears. You then pay 6 months in advance - get the next licence - pay the remaining 6 months in arrears, for however long you stay on DDs.

They don't charge you for the original 6 months 'credit' ...... but thereafter your payments span the licence due date in order it's 'interest neutral'. As explained on the Licensing site :

    Monthly Direct Debit
Over the first six months, you'll pay for your current TV Licence in monthly instalments of around £23. In the seventh month, you'll then start to pay in advance towards your next licence with twelve monthly instalments of less than £12 a month (so you'll make six payments before your new licence is due and six payments after). You'll continue paying for future licences in this way.

The annual cost of a colour TV licence (set by the Government) is currently £139.50. That works out at less than £12 per month - about 38p per day for each household.
I think I'd be phoning up and asking why your paying more than everyone else...as in £26 x 6 = £156... thats £16.50 more than you should be... ring them I would...:D

He's not. You're paying over the odds because there's a credit charge placed on 'quarterly in arrears'. By the time the 1st licence and DD was set up - there must have been only 5 months left in the OP case. So the payments would have been £26 / £27 ...... but only for 5 months until the 2nd set of payments kicked in at around £12.
