Met-UK Plumber Training

Hi,
Not strictly speaking DIY but hopefully someone might be able to help.
I wondered if anyone had any experience with this company? They claim to be the only CORGI Registered Training company in UK?
I am seriously considering a career change and as I have always had an aptitude for plumbing and electrics and there are only 4 Corgi registered plumbers in my town, I thought it might be an option, although they are miles away from me.
I was looking at doing a gas engineer (level 2 & 3) as well as considering doing a domestic electrical installer qualification.
In addition, I live in a huge house that has very out-dated electrics, so will require a complete rewire at some stage in the next couple of years and an overhaul of the plumbing too so it could save me a few quid in the longer run as well as being a career option.

Ignore the Corgi Registered bit, not sure what they mean by that but I would say it's irrelevant, there are tons of gas training centres and they all have to be registered to be able to work with the gas appliances within their centres.
This looks like a type of fast track course that they use for ex-forces and retraining etc, only it would be subsidised in those cases.
The Foundation Levels 2 and 3 can be done at most local tech colleges, usually for a price of in the hundreds of pounds, it's not equivalant to NVQ Level 2 though, it's what it says, a foundation course. You would need work placement with a Corgi Registered Engineer qualified in the areas of work you want to work in, and then build a portfolio of work done under supervision, your local tech may be able to help with this too.
Then you can take the relevant ACS courses at any gas training centre, will probably take a week or two but should be doable for less than £2000 including assessment and certification fees, maybe less than that in fact.
Corgi Registration will initially cost about £360 including registration up to the following March 31st (so pointless joining close to the end of financial year as I don't think they offer pro rata for new entrants, obviously that isn't included in the course you've shown) and will be subject to an interview and assessment of competence by an inspector. Thereafter it's around £180 a year, at least that's what I think I paid this year.
Personally I'd steer clear of this crew, looks iffy to me.0 -
Thanks MSP.
I will do some more digging around.
The main problem I have is that the local tech has scrapped a lot of their courses that they used to do so it looks like I am going to have to look further afield.
It's funny, because after posting, I got a little sceptical. Gut instinct I guessThanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

No problem.
The other problem is you will probably be bound to pay for the whole course, whether in instalments or not, so if you start and find you hate plumbing (like most plumbers do :rotfl: ), you'll still have to see it through I would imagine. If you start with a foundation course at college you can then change your mind if it's not for you.0 -
That's a good point.
To be honest, I do all the non-gas plumbing at home(!) including fitting radiators, fitting hand basins (not done a bath though), fitting electric showers, fixing the toilet, flushing out central heating, etc. My OH doesn't like getting his hands dirty and for some reason I have always been really good at that sort of thing and really enjoy it (should have been born a bloke I guess - bit late now:D )Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
