sale of goods act

As the SOGA isn't specific on timescales i'm finding it hars to find out how long is it reasonable for a laptop battery to last? the manufacturers warranty was 12 months, i've had it for 14. when i mentioned i wanted it replaced under sale of goods act they said i'm not covered because it counts as consumables. is this correct?
Any help appreciated

Not 100% sure that is right. Ultimately it comes down to the District Judge on the day. 50/50 in my view.
Of course, if you issue proceedings, more likely than not a settlement will be forthcoming.
The SOGA does not say how long anything should last, however the guidlines are that "Goods are of satisfactory quality if they reach the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price and any description."
Now any 'reasonable person' would regard 3 years as rather short for a TV lifetime in this day and age. So for the £25 or however much small claims court fee is these days, its worth a try - note that your contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
