Broadband connection help!

Hi people, hope you can help me. I am staying with my parents over Christmas and need to connect to the internet whilst I am there to run my business. I'd ideally love to take my laptop and connect onto their broadband connection (talktalk). I currently use AOL broadband. Do you know if this can be done? Is it as simple as plugging into one of their phone sockets and downloading the talktalk software? What would happen to my AOL connection when I come back home?
Would really appreciate your help.

Yes, you could share your parents' broadband connection, but the 'How?' depends on what type of broadband equipment they have. If they have a router (or modem/router) you'll be able to connect your laptop to this and use the internet independently of their computer. If they only have a modem, you'll have to use Internet Connection Sharing and use the internet via their computer which means it must be switched on.
You don't plug into one of their phone sockets and no need to download Talktalk software either. You plug into the router or your parents' computer using an Ethernet cable, or connect wirelessly if they have a wireless router, so you need to ask them the make and model number of their broadband equipment first.
Your AOL connection should still work when you come home, as long as you don't remove any AOL software etc.0 -
