Sending files through network cable

I was trying to send a file over my wireless network from my laptop to my desktop pc, but I thought it would quicker to use the network cable that came with my router. So I connected the cable to the networks ports on both machines but nothing came up on either pc.

How can I use the cable to move files between the two pc's, i'm sure it's quicker than sending the file over a wireless network. Both pc's are running vista.

doing it pc - pc is hard work unless u know what ur doing and u probably have the wrong cable.

as suggested do it through the router.
then share a folder on the pc that has the file.
go into the network browser on the other pc or type [URL="file://\\nameofpc"]\\nameofpc[/URL] and it should find the pc and the shared folder.

thanks for your replies, do I need two network cables for this, if so I might as well transfer it over the wireless network because I only have one cable

yes i could have transferred it by now , but its useful know if a cable could be used
