New Doors Help

Hi All

I've recently become a mature medical student (1 year done 3 to go) and I'm now living on a tight budget. I've saved up some money and need to replace my front and back door as they are getting desperate (wooden, rotting and not quite fitting). Windows will need replaced to, but they can wait a year or so. I've had one quote from safe-style for plastic doors but this was very very high (£1200+)

Does anyone have any tips for getting good doors economically?
Has anyone had doors fitted front and back, and so that I have an idea how much did it cost?

Thanks in advance...

Wickes / B&Q etc. do them off the shelf.

    Easy to fit.

Oh, would it be worth buying fro a Wickes or similar and paying a guy (or gal) to fit?

Opps, I posted a similar point at the same time as you :rotfl:

Are they any good? Is it worth doing?

I have an 8 foot patio door that I got from Wickes, it is fine.

I paid a local window fitter to fit it, it only took half a day.

    Perfect.;)

ive used wickes many times for doors & windows etc..
doors from about 100 to 300 quid, and get a handyman in if required, for about 100/200 quid.

I have just had a top quality upvc front door/frame fitted for £450 by a quality company. The door is manufactured using high end Kommerling profile/materials and has a DG leaded glass feature complete with all hardware. Unlike the flimsy rubbish that safestyle and some others fit.
  • Hanging a door is not an easy job for an amateur like painting or something.

Get a decent carpenter or an independent window fittier in.

I just had an internal fire door hung and new handles on 7 doors and it cost me £90 - He was here for about 4 hours. Hope this helps.
  • Get a hardwood front door from wickes, about £100. Pay a chippy to fit it. Much nicer than plastic doors.
