Help required saving a folder to a USB flash drive

Hello

Please can someone help me.

I have a folder on my desktop which contains various files (photos, music, rich text documents) which is really valuable to me and I want to save it onto a USB stick. The files are in a specific order and it is vital that I keep them in this order.

The problem I'm having is that every time I try to save the folder to a USB stick, the files are rearranged into a different order. It seems that any file name beginning with a number is arranged in numerical order, and any file name beginning with a letter is arranged in alphabetical order. But I really do not want this. I want the files kept in exactly same order as they are in the folder on my desktop.

Under the View menu I've selected "Thumbnails" and "Align to Grid", and not "Auto Arrange" or anything like that - and yet every time I try to save, the order of the files is changed.

Please can someone help - what am I doing wrong?

(I have Windows XP, in case you need to know that).

Thank you in advance.

  • a longhand way of achieving your ordered layout would be to copy the files manually one by one then set the usb stick view to arrange by date modified.

Being awkward, i have to ask why the order is so important?

if it's to get a slideshow in the right order then you can just rename the photo files with a prefix number to maintain the desired order.
Same could be done with all the files in fact, just add an index number at the start of each filename and ordering by name will maintain the order too.

Why not just rename the files by adding 1 then 2 then 3 etc to the beginning of each file name in your folder, in the order in which you want them to remain? That way, when the USB stick reorders them numerically it will be in the order you want them.

Dont forget that if you have more than 9 files you should precede the first 9 with a zero, 01, 02 etc etc otherwise you'll get 1,11,12,19,2,21 or something like that.
  • Many thanks for all you're replies. I've added a number to the start of each file name and it works!

    Thanks so much.
