To celebrate the release of The Boat That Rocked – in cinemas April 1 – we are offering one lucky reader the chance to win a pair of tickets to the premiere in London, with an overnight stay at the Millennium Mayfair hotel. Dinner is also included at Chef Michele Granziera’s Avista restaurant in the heart of Mayfair.
The Boat That Rocked is an ensemble comedy, wherein the romance lies between young people of the 60s and pop music. It’s about a band of DJs that captivate Britain, playing the music that defines a generation and standing up to a government that incomprehensibly prefers jazz.
White Lies bring death back to pop musicIn the mid 60s – British pop music’s finest era – the BBC played just two hours of rock and roll every week. However, pirate radio played rock and pop from the high seas 24 hours a day; and 25 million people, more than half the population of Britain, listened to the pirates every single day.
Recently expelled from school, Carl (Tom Sturridge) is sent to find some direction in life by visiting his godfather Quentin (Bill Nighy). However, Quentin is the boss of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea, populated by an eclectic crew of rock ‘n’ roll DJs.
The DJs are led by The Count (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), a big, brash American. He’s faithfully backed up by Dave (Nick Frost), Simon (Chris O’Dowd), Midnight Mark (Tom Wisdom), Thick Kevin (Tom Brooke), and On The Hour John, the newsreader. Together, they set about helping Carl on his quest to find himself.

WIN! Tickets to an exclusive preview screening of The Boat that Rocked.
All aboard for The Boat that Rocked! Richard Curtis's comic tale of a pirate's life on the high seas - just not the kind of pirate you're thinking of - is released in cinemas on 1st April and to celebrate, crewmates LOVEFiLM and Universal Studios are giving you the chance to win two tickets to an exclusive screening of the film taking place on the evening of 24 March at a secret luxury location in central London. We're not even going to make you swab the deck to enter. All you have to do is email your details to screening@lovefilm.com with 'The Boat that Rocked' in the subject line and winners will be notified of their success by 23rd March.
In 1966 the BBC played just two hours of rock and roll every week, but from their boats in the North Sea, the pirate DJs played rock and pop 24 hours a day, with 25 million people – more than half the population of Britain – tuning in every single day.
Recently expelled from school, Carl (Tom Sturridge) has been sent by his mother to find some direction in life by visiting his godfather Quentin (Bill Nighy). However, Quentin is the boss of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station populated by an eclectic crew of rock and roll DJs.
There's the The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) - brash, American, god of the airwaves and totally in love with the music. Then there's the Count's co-presenters Dave (Nick Frost) - ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny - and Simon (Chris O’Dowd) - super-nice and searching for true love. And then there's Gavin (Rhys Ifans), who returns from a drug tour of America to find his position as Britain's favourite DJ challenged by the Count.
Meanwhile on land, the pirates have come to the attention of government minister Dormandy (Kenneth Branagh), who prefers jazz, by the way. Dormandy makes it his personal mission to see Radio Rock taken of the airwaves permanently. But rock and roll never dies...
