supermarket help please

Hi, i hope once more someone can help me out as i have a bit of a dilemma!

i started working for morrisons this year in the salad bar, a few weeks in i noticed i was working nearly every friday late night and saturday on these friday late night we finished for about 10:15pm but more or less got out for 10:30pm i was telling my other half to pick me up for half ten all was good untill i was working friday lates with another blue badged trainee who was 16years old and had to leave at 10pm (company policy stated that 2 blue badges arent supposes to be left on their own) leaving me with all the cleaning to do so i was leaving work at 11pm with my other half in the car outside fuming the last straw was when i was rota'd in for a friday late and expected in at 6am the next morning (which you cant do i got that info off here ;) )

andyhoo i explained to personel and i was told i could move to a different department.

i moved 10 week into my training / probationary period, i was getting on well learning the new job but the department manager has harrased me none stop he keeps saying im too slow to other people but when i confront him he says i'm just "through" i put a holiday form in on the 4th on October for the 27th off and he would not take it out of my hand saying "give it to me later" or "not now i'm busy" this went on all night so i handed it in to the assistant department manager on the following saturday.
On the 13th of this month i went into personel to ask if i was going to get my holidays approved or not as my OH was waiting to put in a week off they said they hadnt had a holiday form ask whoever i gave it towhere it was...i went to ask him who swore it was upstairs and to go back up and double check they went through the filing cabinates and said he's i liar go and tell him...go back down personel say your a liar, well tell them i pushed it under the door this went on for another 3 trips before i gave up, i went to the union who said i couldnt have the holiday put another in.
I asked the dep manager when i could have off he said put a form in for the last week in november beginning of december so i did that last week and he's decided i cant have that either but i can have a week in late january.
i thought i was paranoid in thinking that he doesn't like me but other staff on our department say he has it in for me cos he wanted a man on the department and he "definately dosnt like me"
personel say this is my fault cos im too slow at the job i said i havent had propper training and they say it's because they're struggling for staff!

i dont want to make this sound like a sob story but i have only had 1 week of this year in march i said at the interview that if they couldn't garauntee 1 weekend off a month i'd rather stay working where i was but she said i'd get atleast 2 as it was all rolling rotas. i know that was my fault for being gullable.
my other half is on lates and he's sick of waiting so has booked a week off without me!

as for personel i was called in there to brush my hair twice i get a bit of static off the flaps on the chiller doors but other than that it's straight! i had my XL body warmer taken off me because the sleeves are long i wear a large now that doesnt zip up. others can walk around with t-shirts un tucked, un kempt beards and multi coloured hair!!

i get the feeling they dont want me there but obviously can't sack me what if anything can i do?

Just do your best and i suggest if you are not happy start looking for another catering position preferably industrial where you work Monday to Friday the hours are normally between 7-3.

I am quite surprised they don't like you...i was denied a catering job once for being male.
As for the others i don't know what position they are in maybe they are not facing customers or maybe the managers don't care.Don't let this bother you to much or it might affect your productivity.

Most retail businesses don't allow holiday at this time of the year but you can always beg.If you have problems with your dept boss try if you can sort it out if not go to his boss.
  • thankyou for the advice, i'll keep going untill after xmas then start looking elsewhere

  • This is what Morrisons is like. I'm glad I am on maternity leave and considering wether to go back or not. I work on the checkouts and the supervisors and manager are all really nice. I have heard some really horrible things about other departments. I think it depends on the store also.

If your face doesn't fit, you'll get nowhere. OH found that out and left after 4 years. He is doing fantasitic in his new job after 5 weeks and has been given more responcibility (and pay) than he would ever get for morrisons. He didnt even get a leaving card, which most people do when leaving. Whereas they have done a big collection for me for some Mothercare vouchers... and im not a brown noser. Its whether you feel like you can carry on knowing your face doesnt fit and that you are going to get nowhere, just a load of grief. I would say start looking for a new job.

Full of morrisons employees having a moan.
  • Hi I,m one of those morrison employee moaners lol .
If you are feeling bullied at work you can put a grievence complaint in , no one should be bullied .The problem with morrisons is they have such a big turn over of staff nobody is trained properly and you are left on your own far too quick without learning the ropes .
Haven't you a holiday form box outside personel ?
I know you have to get your manager to sign it but if they wont I would go straight to personel and complain about it .
You can opt out of working sundays too if that helps .
  • Morrisons are the worst company in the world, based on what my ex went through with them.

On several occassions, when my ex was on annual leave, the store always phoned him to say can he do a shift. One day it was at 4am! Annual leave means that the employee wants a few days/weeks off so don't contact them!

Also, if his store's employees did their shopping at the store on their days off, they were expected to go on the tills for a couple of hours! People made excuses so not doing the hours. Afterwards, people were shopping at the other stores.

If you on Facebook, join the group You know you've worked in Morrisons/ a supermarket when ......

Basically a good moan about customers, managers and silly Morriscums (what my ex called them) policies

It's not my problem anymore as spilt up with my ex over a year ago. Morrisons is the only supermarket in a town of a pouplation of 20-22k. The nearest supermarket is another Morrisons, 4.5 miles away! But the problem for those who don't have a car, the bus doesn't stop outside the latter store from the place the former Morrisons is. It's like a 10 min walk.

Staff at his Morrisons refused to do their weekly shop there. They will buy a few bits at the end of a shift

I'm glad I didn't work at Morrisons! I used to work at Asda, which was very good. If you didn't get a holiday you could do shift swaps. Have you tried that? I'd hold onto your job until you get a new one though, because at these times it's tough looking for work!
  • thanks for all the replies, im on the facebook site and will have a look at the morrisons page on here.

i dont know about the grievance as im thinking of leaving the union it's a aste of money.

my manager wouldnt take the form but the assistant manager did then it got "lost" the way they had me chasing after eachother made it a bit petty but my manager then said i could have the end of november off as soon as i put the form in he changed his mind.

im guess im glad that i'm not the only one suffering at the hands of morrisons! i think it's appaling how they treat the staff and im amazed that they can't understand why all the staff keep leaving.

    will stick it out though.
