Is that when someone takes in a Giro slip to pay a bill like a catalogue at the bank? That does seem odd. Halifax don't accept those.
It's far, far more common than you might think. And not just with pensioners. Lots of people still insist on paying credit card bills and things with cash for some reason, even though it's an absolute pain in the !!!! for everyone concerned and if something goes wrong it's an even bigger pain to try and trace them, because you're paying what may be important bills with a scrappy bit of paper.
Funny you should mention Halifax; when their customers try and pay bills over their counters, they get told by them to come to HSBC - they fail, however, to mention the £5 charge we levy for non-customers to use our counter or that they can't use it at all between 11 and 2pm, which has led to more than one !!!!ed off shouting customer in our branch because of their inadequacy. This is just one of numerous reasons why Bank Giro Credits need to die.0 -

Vaguely relevant, but at Abbey we don't accept bill payments over the counter either, so if the customer insists on paying this way we refer them to the bank the company deals with. Are you saying that, even if the company the customer is paying banks with HSBC, you still charge the 5 pound fee? Or is that just if the payment has no relationship with you whatsoever?
If the customer doesn't hold any HSBC accounts, they're charged for doing stuff at our counter, with a few limited exceptions (HMRC bills, the DWP and Avon are two of the biggies).
Don't be misled; if a giro has "HSBC" on it, chances are that the company only uses us to collect money on their behalf, not for their banking. (I say this because "it's got HSBC on it" is a common line of whinging inquiry at work.)0
