can i use energy bulbs with dimmers

hi, i have just bought some of the energy bulbs from tesco 5 for 40p ,
but was wondering if you can use them with dimmer switches  ? it doesn't say anything on the box but i think one of the symbols means you cant use them.
i did put one in and turn it on and it works ok but am still unsure.
any sparkys out there can shed some light on it, as i would love to change all my bulbs to energy ones but have lots of dimmers.

thanks all.

My neighbour has a load of compact fluorescent lamps and they definitely will not dim. I think that there are some special fittings which will allow dimming, but not if you just replace the lamp in an ordinary household type fitting. Somebody out there may know different, if so, I stand ready to be corrected.
I can afford anything that I want.

    Yes and no.

Not the ordinary ones you see in the shop

However megaman make dimer able bulbs called DORS

They are not cheap about £8-£12
  • Hi,

Just to calarify. Megaman make two kinds of dimmerable energy saving bulbs, dimmerable and smooth dimming. I have the smooth dimmering and they work on dimmer switches, but not touch or remote dimmers.

They are expensive at £12 a bulb, but they last for ages.

You can use them with the "Push on/off" dimmers, so long as the dimmer is always at 100%. You can't dim a CF using conventional methods.

Kind of defeats having an expensive dimmer in the first place.

Simple answer is no they can't be dimmed. However if you fancy spending £8 + on 1 lightbulb - hardly moneysaving - then they can be.
