Will a double radiater make bedroom much warmer?

Hi there,

I have oil central heating, costs a lot even with prices coming down a bit. I have a baby 4 mths old and as weather is getting cold now (sometimes temperature in bedroom is maybe as low as 14 degrees should be at least 18 degrees I think for a bedroom) We have a single long radiater in bedroom and I wonder if replacing it with a double radiater same size would make much of a difference to heat of room? I set the heating to come on for an half an hour or so a few times during the night, and would like to keep bedroom as near as possible to the reccomended 18 degrees without having a huge home heating bill.

ALl ideas gratefully appreciated,

thanks in advance
tina

A double radiator will give a lot more heat than a single of the same dimensions, but you get nothing for nothing.

It will take more heat to run.

You would get the same results at the same cost in fuel if you ran what you got for longer.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Have you checked out how much insulation you have in the roof. If you haven't got 250mm then get some more put in. It will make a huge difference to the amount of heat lost through the ceiling at night. I have just doubled the thickness of mine and, although, I can't quantify the improvement. The whole house seems more snug, especially at night, and it was pretty good before, I thought. We have the heating off from 9.30pm until 6.30am.
Before you upgrade the heating you should upgrade the insulation. It is more cost effective. Increasing the heating will just cost you more to run it, but increasing the insulation is a one off cost, and has a fairly short pay back time.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Is 18 degrees recommended because of the baby or generally. It sounds sweltering to me but myabe I'm odd. when my son was born we had no heating in the bedroom at all which obviously wasn't ideal and he was born beginning of December but he was well wrapped up in sleepsuit and blankets.

First check that the boiler is powerful enough to supply the bigger radiator.
I ordered a double panel radiator today to replace the single panel radiator in my bedroom, I did notice that even for the same size double panel radiator, some had a bigger output than others. I ordered one from plumbworld via quidco to get a bit of cashback.

18C is only about 66F, hardly sweltering.
