Am I right in thinking that you don't need to attatch a customs slip, if you are sending books abroad (to the US in this case) using 'Printed Papers'?

I would check with the Royal Mail.

In particular...
If you are sending items to continue outside the EU by the Printed Papers service, it's advisable to sign a Customs document. You must do this if you are sending books to Algeria or the Dominican Republic, or any printed materials to Bangladesh, Djibouti, India, Japan or Zimbabwe. If you are sending printed items to Venezuela, you should contact your Royal Mail Sales Centre on 08457 950 950.0 -
My post office always want me to complete the white customs docket for all US parcels regardless of what is in them, I never realised that I didn't actually have to do it if I was sending books.
