Ok, do you want house prices to go up or down ?

Let me consider the question. Here are some commodities I would like to see lower in price.
food
gas
rates
electric
petrol
clothes
etc.
oh and house prices.
Why would anyone want the price of anything to go up? It makes no sense at all. If housing were more sensibly priced - capped even - then there might be more free money in the economy to do other things - like support businesses that make things or provide services. Instead of propping up a pyramid of pointless parasitic leeches who provide nothing of any real value, just moving money around and raking off their bit.0 -
I would like them to go upWhen you think about it BTL must have made an enormous difference. There are over a million of them now arent there - thats a lot of houses. Nearly everyone you meet seems to own a BTL in the last couple of years. OH was dog walking this morning and the two other people walking their dogs were both BTLs in their mid forties and both were saying they couldnt see they would lose money on their new build purchases from last year! Though I guess you only lose money if you sell them and if they hold on to them for 20 years???0

I hear that a lot, that I'm too young to be a barrister, how long was I a solicitor for first, etc....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I would like them to go downThe best way I can explain this is with some real word examples;
What a lot of crooks and thieves you know or are related to!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I would like them to go downI hope you reported all those people lying to the Inland Revenue?
Or did you - as I suspect, Conrad - just think it a great opportunity to sell them a mortgage?0 -
Down to reasonable levels again. About £80k for a 3 bed semi should be fine!
And i'll buy 3 or 4 of them.
And then so does everyone else and it starts all over again;)
House prices need to come down to around a nationwide average of £145-£150k.
So not long to go now before they stabilize and stagnate.0 -

Why would anyone argue? It seems like the perfect situation.
What people are frightened of is the fallout that will be caused in reaching those market conditions from here.0 -

LOL...wll I can see why, you guys gt th glamourous end, eh? Its th bit that would interst me too. DH is probably going to do bcom solicitor advocat, more as a hobby than anything, and bcause in the other juristictions in which h will b qualified the role is, of course, combined. But he says he'll always be jalous about the wig
actually, a coupl of DH's colleages became solicitors aftr being barristers.. what happns there I wonder? 0 -
I would like them to go downIf they were a barrister and are now solicitors, I think they are wig-less. Don't rely on that, though....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

I would like them to go downOne question, what if one of them takes say five years or so out, to look after any little people that arrive, is that still affordable?
Dunno really. As a couple with no kids (and don't plan to have any) we are constantly amazed that people with kids afford anything, let alone housing. I would imagine that on one income they couldn't afford it, no. But not sure whether that really relates to the question: there's millions of factors that effects whether you can afford a house, having children being one of them. Either sell the house for a cheaper one or don't have the kids.
You may have noticed that I'm not in the "a house should be affordable to everyone on a 2x income basis" crowd - housing is like gold, oil, stocks, shares and everything else that goes up and down and has very expensive and very cheap periods.0
