Vehicle Checks on a used car

I'm about to buy a used Ford Galaxy on Monday. It looks great and I'm happy with it. I secured the car with £200 yesterday and will pay the balance next week. However, the dealer suggested I get a vehicle check done on it at a cost of £25. Is this necessary as he said the dealership had already done a check themselves and nothing came up. Also, if I should do a check is it best to do it with them (through Experian I think) or should I go for an AA or RAC or other motoring type company which maybe be a bit cheaper?

Any advice, much appreciated.

Thanks,

Michelle

Google 'HPI check' and I think you can get one done starting at about £5. The more you spend, the more information you get. Check the list of what you get before deciding how much to spend.

I paid about £30 for one when I bought a car some years ago. All Clear.

Had the car about 5yrs, no problems at all, passed all the MOT's.

When I went to replace it, I sent it through an Auction but had a call later that night (after it had been sold) from the Auction House informing me it was a Cat D write off 5yrs ago (coincidently just before I bought it).

I'm not sure how long it takes this kind of information to get through to the Auto-check companies, but in those days it certainly wasn't instant.

I had to drop the auctioned price, the buyer still took it due to all the MOT passes but I had absolutely no idea of it's history despite the auto check.
  • wiper motors on these, the vw sharan and seat version always burn out due to bad design of the linkage, make sure they work, sounds silly but a second hand motor on ebay has been seen to go fo £90
