Can anyone tell me what it means when on the instructions on a home hair dying kit where it says do not use if hair has been coloured with a progressive colour.

It means they wont guarantee the outcome of the colour you are applying due to the previous colour.

ie. if you have bleached blonde hair it is very porous, if you put a burgundy semi over it, it stands a chance it will go pink.

Thanks for that . So does it only mean when you have had your hair lightened or can it also mean when you have had your hair dyed darker ?

If you have coloured your hair on a regular basis it stands a chance your hair is very porous , so if you put a colour on it that is only meant to last a few weeks it stands a chance the porous hair will grab the colour and not wash out.

If you are bleached blonde and you suddenly decide that you want to go brown, if your unfortunate, you may go a horrible kakhi green colour. I have been varying shades of blonde/dark brown over the last 10 years or so and am so fortunate i only had one disaster that the hairdresser had to put right.

my advice through recent haircolour disasters is if you have any doubt at all before you put it on,like if you dont know quite what colour it will turn out,darker/lighter or if you have different shades in your hair from root to ends is please go the hairdresses. If it goes wrong then you will end up there anyway
home hair colours are good and i have recently done it myself again, with no problems at all,is that they are not as concentrated as the salons colours, also you tend to look at a colour and say oh i like that but it really wont 'take' on your hair through reasons as above or because either it will go darker or lighter then you wanted.
once you are at the hairdresser,or maybe go for a trim and ask them what colour to put on,i did that last time and she told me anything over 4.0 on the box.
    good luck
appreciate what you have got x

After lots of horrible hair colours (my hair tends to go red when dyed) The home hair kits seem to be too savage for my hair. I went to the local hair training salon. A full hair dye is 12 quid including cut and blow dry! it takes ages because they are training but i have been going there for a year now and have lovely glossy brown hair. I use HOET in Birmingham city centre but I know there are loads around and much cheaper than the hairdresses.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

I called the help line on the hair dye packet and spoke to a lovely lady . She said it means when you have used products like Sun-In .The stuff you spray on your hair that progressively keeps on lightening your hair ( I can remember having orange hair at 14 due to this nasty stuff) or Henna as that continues to redden your hair.

As you can probably guess I am not happy with my hair result !!!as a bit too dark . Looking like Mortica Adams. She said the best thing was to use one of the special cleansing shampoos and wait at least 3 weeks before attempting to do any more home hairdressing.
Been to Boots today to get my shampoo so hopefully will be looking a bit lighter by this evening.

    hi trinnylilac
that is what exactly happened to me,i just chose the wrong colour, thought it would be ok,but it was way to dark, anyway i went to the hairdreses and im not reccomending you do this at home, although it worked, was a peroxide shampoo, which was peroxide and normal shampoo mixed together massaged onto the hair as you would normally for about a minuet then rinse, she then but a toner.I was then left with a colour i put in 3 dyes before that,i then reloured after with a colour i wanted.
i had to condition my hair and i treated it every other day with hot oil,or cocunut oil and leave it in,and now its back to good condition.
again i personally wouldnt try it at home.

That has really made me laugh

    I think I will give it a miss :o .
Considering what I have done to myself so far imagine the damage I could do with peroxide      !!!!!!.

It would be like being 14 all over again .

hahaha,i know i have just re read it back.
what i meant was when i put the colour that was too dark i went out and bought another 1 to go over it thinking it wouldmakeit go lighter, guess what it didnt,it went darker!!so out again to buy another one in desperation.
that is when i went the hairdresses, its quite easy to do and I personally would do it myself,it doesnt lighten your hair just takes the colour off what has been put in,works especially good if you have only just or in the last couple of days.
what we women do to a.save a bit of money than going and treating ourselves in a salon
b.to make our selves look georgeous!!
appreciate what you have got x
