A Car - What to offer?

**Amy**
**Amy** Posts: 2,680 Forumite
I gave up my car in January to try and tackle my debt, which i have done.

I promised myself that when I had paid off my interest charging debt I would get another car.

It looks like that time is just around the corner, and I have found a car at a dealers near me.

It is up for £1,495, already reduced by £200 in the past 2 months.

My dad has said its a good time to buy from a dealer as I could get a good deal (what with the economic climate etc.!).

What im wondering is, what would be a good offer? They do say on their website "make us an offer", but I dont want them to think I'm not serious about the car.

Sorry for the long winded post!

Any suggestions?

xx

Er, silly question, what car is it?

It is a good time to buy, but doesn't mean it's a good deal. May be better answered on the motoring forum too?

Well, without knowing too much more, I did a search on autotrader for similar vehicles, and it shows similar aged vehicles from £300/400 upward. See here. If you could add the mileage, no of doors and man/auto you'd get a better comparison.

Still sounds a bit pricey though...

offer 1100, haggle a bit and up it to 1200 anymore than that it's too much. Walk away, if the car is still there after 2 weeks go back and re-offer the 1200.

How about buying a car for £300? If it's in good condition most repairs needed won't cost £1000. And there's still a chance you'd need to fork out for expensive repairs on a £1495 corsa. You usually can't predict when these sort of things happen, although the best prevention is good maintenance and servicing.

If it's been in stock for 2months, thats a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time, for these popular models.

So it possibly is overpriced - still!! So if you like the look of it, try a cheeky offer - maybe £1000... they can only say no!!
