How to disable programs?

I used to do start - run - misconf from start up to disable programs. Since I downloaded cleaner I have not been able to do it, I get the message files are missing etc. Is this due to the fact that I have used ccleaner? Please is there any other way I could disable programs? Thanks.

  • Do you mean disable the programs that start in the system tray automatically?

If so, you can get rid of these by using ccleaner, goto 'tools' on the left, and then there is a 'startup' button, you can then delete entries so they dont auto start. Be careful what you delete though, as you might mess things up. Best to creat a restore point first, just in case :)
  • start - run - msconfig.
It should work unless you've got Windows 2000 which doesn't have it.

Thanks for this, it worked, I guess, I did not spell it right and thought I have messed things up when I used ccleaner. I only wanted to disable my AV. Any idea how I could get in my registry to check my AV license number, please? I remember having to change it last year when it would not update automatically as the old license key was still in the registry. Thanks again.

Sorry, I can't help you there. What I'd do is ...start...run...regedit....edit....and search the registry for your AV using whatever names it is likely to be under. Careful though, perhaps better to back up first and not to touch any other entry.

Why do you want your license number?

Sometimes when I run a program, it asks me to disable my av software.

I want my license number because last time when I downloaded an antivirus upgrade, I input the wrong license number and it did not let me do the automatic update. Somehow, I am not sure whether it was the AV support who help me to change it in the registry. It's time for me to update my antivirus again and I just want to be prepared. It's strange, my av has just expired but it is still updating.

    What?

This shouldn't happen. Which program is instructing you to do this?

    Download Belarc here.....

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Install it and it will take a profile of your computer's hardware & software. It will also reveal all the key/installlation codes etc. for programs. Useful if you have lost any of them.

You could always consider uninstalling your present AV and getting one of the free ones, the two most popular being Avast and AVG. I've used both but now prefer Avast.
