Netgear MR814 Please help

Hi, First of all I must let you know I havent got a clue about wireless stuff but here goes. I am on NTL broadband with a modem box which connects via a usb port. I have just bought a Netgear Mr814 as I was told it would work for me. How do I connect it? I have connected the ethernet thing from the router into my tower but when I try to set it up it keeps saying no internet connection!! I also got a little silver wireless USB adapter with the package but havent got a clue what to do with that! Thinking maybe I should just pay someone to come and sort it. All I want is for my son to be able to share my NTL broadband with me on his new computer hes getting for xmas. Please go easy on me Thanks, Angela.

  • What's the make and model number of your modem?

The Netgear MR814 wireless router connects to a modem using an Ethernet cable, however if your modem doesn't have an Ethernet port then you won't be able to connect it.
  • Hi, Thanks for the reply. I cant find a make or model number it just says NTL home broadband. It has got a ethernet connection in the back but my broadband doesnt use it. Should I be plugging the ethernet cable I got with the router into the modem and the router?
  • Sounds like it should work then. Connections should be:

Ethernet port on Computer ---(Ethernet cable)---> One of the 4 LAN ports on MR814

Internet port on MR814 ---(Ethernet cable)---> Ethernet port on modem

So you need 2 Ethernet cables.
  • Ah I see, well i.ve only got one cable!! Can I get another one from somewhere? I tried the Netgear wizard and it keeps saying 'isp address is in conflict with another system on the network'
  • Done a quick search on Ebay for ethernet cable, there are loads! please can you point me in the right direction which one I will need. Thanks, again.
  • Crossover cable or straight through one though? Some NTL cable modems require a crossover cable and some don't. If a crossover is required it should say so by the Ethernet port; if it doesn't then it needs a straight through one. Is there a model number on the underside or back of the box?

So we need that info before we can tell exactly which type of network cable to buy.
  • No, definately cant find a model number, had this box for a few years now. I've just been reading a few threads about wireless and now i'm even more confused! How will the new computer upstairs get connected to the internet? Do I need to buy cards etc? Starting to wish I'd never bought my son a computer for xmas now!! Should I buy a different router
    package?

That's what the little USB wireless adaptor's for - it simply plugs into a USB slot on your son's computer and the computer can then connect wirelessly to the router. Don't worry, you don't need to buy anything else, apart from another Ethernet cable.

I would take a guess at a straight through cable, but without any labelling of the ports on the back wouldn't like to say for sure.
  • ok thanks again, going shopping tomorrow so I'll head for a computer shop and ask about cables. Thankyou so much. Angela.

heres the netgear help line number
    tel 08701121206
i have just set up similar system and found the helpfull

extract from email from the co i purchased mine from i also have an indepth but confusing ebook i could send if you require

Here's briefly how to configure the router,(my instructions....Plug cable from router into moden to single hole then other cable from next hole into back of pc)

Basically the router doesn't need any software it is configured by logging into it.

The first thing you need to do is install and configure your USB adaptor or PCMCIA adaptor and install the Netgear software, the Netgear software 'takes over' the windows wireless software.

To log in to the router type in the following in the internet explorer address bar http://192.168.0.1/basicsetting.htm you should now have a Netgear setup screen.

Please note that the router won't function properly unless the Netgear software is installed.
i rang & they talked me through it
