Moving your electric meter - NO CHARGE!

Options
Hi All,

This is my first post...
I requested today for my electric meter to be moved 30cm up on the same wall today - to my enerygy supplier (Scottish Power).

They wanted none of it.. "If the meter is moving 'off the board' then you need your local electricity distributor to come and do this" ... OK...

I call YEDL (Yorkshire Electricity Distribution Ltd) - that will be £400 please - no way!

I speak to their loss & supply dept who say - no this is a free request - you are moving the meter less than 1 meter - Scottish Power's meter operator's problem.
Who is this - in most cases its Meter Plus.

I call SP back - explain again - no our meter opp for the area in N-Power.
Call N-Power - no we are not.

Call YEDL - call meter plus in Leeds and talk to them.
Meter Plus - yes free of charge job - tell SP you need them to send them a D5 flow.

OK - Call SP - you got it wrong - Meter Plus is the meter operator for the area - this is their number....send them a D5 flow.
SP - No - you are moving it off the board (a piece of MDF!) - YEDL must do it.
No - YEDL are not insured to touch the meter - you need to sort it with Meter Plus.
Hold please...

OK - No problem - we will come out on 14th Nov to move it.

OK - so my electrician says make sure you are in - waiting for them.
Mount a new 'board' onto the wall before they come and make sure access is good otherwise they will not touch it.

Saved £400!

Don't let your energy companies make you pay for this if you are moving the meter less than 1 meter on the same wall.

I would like ours moved up a flight of stairs! Our gas meter is at the top of our cellar steps and the electric at the bottom. Haven't looked into it yet but wonder what are acceptable reasons for wanting a meter moved without having to pay for it.
  • No reason provided in my case. Moving that far I would say probably a charge

If you are disable suppliers will try and move the meter to a suitbale location for you but this is subject to restriction like; not moving the main intake cable, not more that a short distance from its current location. Other than that they can charge for any move. If the main intake needs to be moved then this has to be done by the distributor.

I'm sure there'd be a charge. That's why I've not done anything about it. I suppose once we have smart meters, it will be less relevant where it is.

    Nice post, and interesting information!

Without being too cynical, I would wait until 15th Nov before booking the kitchen fitters!!
