any local timber merchants would be able to supply what you're after. There is nothing wrong with veneer using an mdf or chipboard core, this will look like real wood to all intense and purpose. Melamine faced chipboard (MFC) looks a bit cheap IMHO so would avaiod this.

In terms of 'real wood', have an idea of the type you want before heading down to the merchants (ie beech/ash/oak etc...) this will save you making your mind up then and there! :D

the cost of the hardwood to make such an item could be excessive however, due to the need to buy a minimum quantity, and you wil probably only use sheet materials anywway?
I am a building surveyor and will provide advice based upon what you tell me. It is just that, advice and not instructions. Based on the fact you're getting it for free expect it to be vague! :D

well i want the wood thickness quite chunky about 15cm. price wise around £250. ive had a look on ikea but they all look too designed i would like something very simple literally a bench with 1 shelf in a nice dark wood.

how much do you think it would cost in materials?
  • If you live near a glasswells (I dont know if these are regional), they have a dark (real) wood tv bench with one shelf for £200. Really nice. I was going to get one myself, but it didn't have enough space for all my kit. :(
