Income Support - help with heating?

My partner and I live in a mid-terrace house that has an absolutely ancient back boiler which we have to switch on everytime we want some hot water and our gas bills are through the roof.

British Gas have advised (under their Homecare scheme) that we need to have this replaced (which we knew anyway but it's always nice for someone to state the obvious) however my partner is claiming Job Seekers Allowance after being made redundant and we're struggling as it is - definately can't afford a new boiler!

Does anyone know of any scheme or grant that we could maybe apply for to receive help in having the old back boiler removed and a new boiler installed?

If your house is in property of the council - you can report it to your local council to repair it free of charge but ... if your property is brought by you and your partner, then I am afraid that you both have to pay it to be repairing or replacement. Because Income Support got nothing to do with your boiler heater. Can't your partner pay it with his redundary payment ?

Have you checked to see whether you're eligible for a Warmfront grant?

  • Hi Chameleon, thanks for the link I will have a look at that :)

Proview, he hadn't been with the company all that long and only received 2 months pay as a redundancy package - that was back in August :undecided

You said income support but then said your OH gets JSA - do you get IS and him JSA?

If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!
  • Sorry didn't mean to confuse!!

I work full time and my partner claims Job Seekers Allowance.

Hi, as you are in Leeds I just had a quick look on the council website and found the following information:-

    http://www.leeds.gov.uk/Environment_and_planning/Grants/Home_improvements__home_repair_assistance_grant.aspx

Not sure if you qualify, but it might be useful.
