Well I'd be worried if I worked for you Martin!!! Is there something you want to tell them?

And for the record, I answered 'No'.

Like many other respondents it would appear, I have little faith in the honesty, integrity or ability of my management. (No that doesn't mean I work for the government!)

At my last company I took a temporary 15% paycut for 3 months to prevent other 'at-risk' departments from having to make redundencies. I didn't mind too much as it was only temporary and we were promised shares once things picked up again- if it was going to be permanent I would have taken the paycut but started looking for a new job.

For what it's worth, senior management actually took a 30% paycut during this time.
  • my husband had £200 a month taken off him just so others could have a pay rise i think this is unfair because my husbands job is harder and more dangrouse then these other ones

Well in working for the goverment and getting a pay offer which is yet again below inflation (even the official rate) I have in fact been taking a pay cut for a few years. As I still work there, I suppose I should vote yes.

I'd rather not loose money, our company has been piling the overtime on for the last few months, put an extra shift on (taking on about 800 new staff on 15% less basic than their co-workers) and due to us having a 2 year pay-deal our wages have fell way behind inflation. Despite all the warnings that we are heading for a recession, they've only just put the brakes on production, putting one half of the factory on stand-down. The last 2 years have seen record profits for the company, now we're heading towards the next pay-talks it's all doom and gloom. Happens every time. All this is on top of our pensions being hit. Those at management level and above negotiate their own salaries and bonuses, if they give us a lower pay-rise they get a bigger bonus

I really wish one could believe in the integrity of management - thinking of the comment of a recent poster. There ARE shining examples of those who do have integrity - and I just wish that there were more people with integrity around - in every sphere of life. Unfortunately - I have witnessed the actions of management over various different firms all round and it has so often been the case that they have been looking out for their own interests and darn the workers. I commend the odd shining examples that havent done so and have tried to be totally fair - I just wish there was more of them.

The management in firms are only doing what many people do in many different contexts when they play a little "fast and loose" with telling the truth of a situation and looking out for their own interests - its just the way our Society currently is to a large extent playing out in a work context this time. I wish I didnt have to be this cynical about the chances of management being totally transparent in saying how things are and sharing in an equivalent amount of "pain" - but experience has taught me that things dont usually work that way.

Don't worry the idea was actually MSE Natasha's not mine... I did ask if she was making a suggestion though... and her face blanched ;)

I voted no, in my working life I have been asked to take a pay cut 3 times and each time have voted no but the majority had voted yes.
In all 3 cases it made no difference, the redundancies were only delayed by a couple of months and more went than were originally forecast and we all ended up with smaller wage packets and people who had voted to accept the cut suddenly realised their mistake.

If it was impossible to get another job then obviously i'd take the 10% pay cut and grumble a lot ;)

If it was the usual crappy jobs that I do that are two-a-penny and are about minimum wage anyway then i'd tell them to get stuffed and go get some other crappy job.

  • I assumed the hypothetical situation was only meant to provide you with a choice of a paycut or the possibility of losing your job. A lot of people have lost their jobs recently and it brings home the reality.

I voted yes because I've a family and job security is my main priority.

That said if my boss is watching - don't get any ideas!
