PC advice please

Two days ago my Dell 8400 froze. It wouldn't restart via ctrl alt del. I had to turn off at the plug. When i turned the plug back on my PC wouldn't even boot up. The orange light lit up on the PC power button, but no boot up.
I left it for a while and when trying again it started as normal.
24 hours later it done the same thing but this time it won't start up, just the orange light on power button. wallbash.gif

I have XP home sp2.

Cheers

  • Sounds like it's overheating. Open the case and clean out all the fans and vents. Run it with the case open and see if the problem goes away.

If that doesn't fix it then it could be a power supply, memory or hard disk problem.

Or could be a motherboard problem.

How proficent are you with PCs? I would suggest taking out each component one at a time (ide cables, memory - not cpu or graphics card) and try booting up each time.

Or could be as simple as a loose cable.

Or you could get a dell engineer to come out - is it still under warrenty?

Yes is still under warranty until mid Jan ! :j

But was hoping it wasn't serious enough to send away over xmas !

Its been fine until we moved home 2 months ago. Hard drive was damaged by the removers (although insured, they don't cover hard drives as they can break at anytime ! ). Replaced that 3 weeks ago.

I will get my brother to check inside PC, he knows what his looking at.
It was also suggested to me to check the ABCD lights on back of PC, this will indicate a hardware problem.

I know, we are taking it further. If nothing comes of it you will see me shouting from the roof tops not to use this company.
