I found the nicotine inhalers very useful. They dont suit everyone as you can get indigestion from them if you over do it. But whatever aid you choose, just keep thinking I wont have a ciggie til later and after a while you honestly dont want one because you are letting yourself down and everyone else. Once you see sparkling teeth and clear skin you will be very glad you have packed them up - get that silkquit meter program download (free) and you will be horrified when you see the number of fags you have not smoked - I stopped using the program after I felt I was ok - but seeing figures like 5000 cigs not smoked and imagining them in a huge pile really shocks you.
  • Thats great I wil l try that hethmar.. how long has it been since you gave up ? how do you deal with the Panic attacks.. as that what I remember getting when I have given up before..

My hygieniest also told me to use a Braun. I bought the new one with a little wireless screen which tells you if you are being too brutal or not covering all areas! It was about £140 but I got it for just over £60 - Boots have an offer at the moment on half price for it.

But as toothsmith has said, the best thing you could do for your teeth and gums is pack up smoking. My new dentist virtually told me Id be wasting my money on a lot of cosmetic work if I didnt pack up smoking as it would so badly damage not only my teeth work but my gums. That was enough for me, my doctor had also urged me to pack up for other reasons. I was smoking over 20 a day for 4 decades. I packed up slowly over 3 weeks and it wasnt easy and I still have an urge, particularly first thing in the morning BUT its now nearly 2 years since my last fag. Ive saved over £3k which more than paid for all my cosmetic dentistry plus lots of other treats like Radley bags! You should really download a program called silkquit which tells you daily how many cigs you havent smoked, how much money you have saved and how much in theory you have lengthened your life.

When I went for my last dental check up, the dentist was very pleased with the results of the cosmetic work. I said to him I was still not smoking and he replied he already knew that because my gums were so healthy now and there were no stains on my teeth plus - he couldnt smell any smoke on me!!

Give it up now before the wedding :)

I gave up 3 1/2 years ago ( over 30 a day) after reading the allen Carr book

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allen-Carrs-Easy-Stop-Smoking/dp/0141026898/ref=sr_1_1/277-6998778-5750003?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225554405&sr=8-1

Absolute miracle, I gave up overnight cold turkey and never looked back (did have a few fluey bouts after about 5 weeks). Now don't even think about them.

You can see where I do all my shopping.

How brilliant steve: I gave up 2 years ago on 10 December 2006 :) - its amazing how many people remember the day they gave up when you ask them. It took me three weeks to stop completely. The worse was the first one of the day. Then one day I got up, no fags in the pack - usually Id rush down to the local petrol station without make up, even in slippers on occasions, just to get my drugs. But that day, I thought No, I wont be a bloody slave to something which is actually killing me slowly. Didnt go down, drunk a couple of cups strong coffee and then got on with doing anything to keep my mind off. Thing is, dont dwell on the fact you havent got a ciggie, let it just go - think Ill just not have one now - but think that every time :)

Now when I go in a pub or whatever and see the poor saps still addicted, having to stand outside in the rain puffing at their ciggies, I feel quite smug not to say relieved that Im no longer a druggie like them.

Oh Steve, amazon are VERY good though arent they. I wish they were a quidco merchant though.

Just look on the link I provided, how many people have given the book 5 stars (466).
Poor Allen died of cancer last year after helping all those people to give up smoking, ironic is it not, although I think he did smoke about 100 (yes one hundred) a day up to age of 50.

How very sad. Ive lost my mother (at 66) and bro in law (at 54) to lung cancer and just recently a very dear friend, lovely bloke - from massive coronary at 48. He did try to pack up a year ago on doctors advice but just couldnt seem to manage to kick the habit. Terrible waste.

I gave up 13 yrs ago.

I'd only been smoking for about 10 yrs then though (I started just before my finals as I thopught I was eating too much chocolate!!) But I only meant to smoke until after my exams - that's how easily it hooks you!

I gave up as soon as my wife found out she was pregnant.

Half a packet of fags out the car window, and not touched one since.

I'd had several failed attempts to give up before then, which all ended in failure. I think that giving up is EASY - but ONLY when you have a good reason to. Until you have a good reason, it's virtually impossible.

Wildcat - your good reason is you ARE going to loose your teeth if you don't. You asked about the panic attacks when you have given up before. How do they compare to the panic attacks when you think of a life with plastic dentures.

The way your dentist is planning your treatment, stopping is ESSENTIAL. And I would go as far as to say that waiting until the end of Nov is too late. You need to not light your next cigarrette. Now.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
