What can I do about a Replacement tooth

  • Thanks everyone for replying, the reason I picked the Hungarian dentist is because my stepbrothers wife is Hungarian and she had her braces done there and she is really happy with the results and I must say her teeth look great now.

Thanks Toothsmith for that link, and I didn't find them listed on that site, but I am not 100% sure of the spelling of their last names.. though I will check that out... however going on the BDA website, the practice is listed there.

I am going back to London tomorrow, I know you may think I'm mad, but its the only way I am going to have this tooth fixed. For just the Gum disease treatment i.e. hygenist , plate for tooth .. brace taken off, the UK denitist wants to charge me £1300, then to have the brace back on again well that would be at least £2500.so thats nearly £4000 and I just don't have that money ..

Whereby the treatment by the Hungarian Dentist is £2100 all in.. including my old fillings replaced with white porcelain fillings.

The Hungarian Dentist did call me to tell me that she was fully aware of my Gum disease, but feels that she is treating it before, during and after my brace.

I feel in a way I am slightly to blame here due to the fact that I am getting married next September, as I feel that she probaby is rushing it through a bit because I want to look nice on my wedding day..

I'll let you know how I get on.. but thank you for all your replies..

    They're your teeth.

Photoshopping the teeth on the wedding pictures would be a lot cheaper than having a rushed/cheap/bodged job on the things that you really want to last you more than one day in September.

But - you pays your money......
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Gum disease isn't just 'treated' by somebody else, and then all's well.

The reason you have gum disease is that there is a problem with how you look after your teeth, in particular your toothbrushing. (Do you smoke?)

The only way it will be treated successfully is by educating you in how to do a better job yourself.

It makes it 100 times harder to do this if your teeth are all wired together and there are lots more plaque traps.

Ther is no way any sensible dentist would begin orthodontic treatment on someone with untreated, unstable gum disease.

If you can't afford £4000 for a decent job, then you can't afford to flush £2100 down the toilet.

  • Yes I do understand what you are saying and it seems that I haven't been doing a good job myself with the welfare of my teeth... and yes I do smoke. The dentist today went through that all with me. The Hungarian Dentist has been taking the Tartar though she calls it Calculus and Plaque off my teeth, and has polished and scraped my teeth.. I don't know what its all called sorry..I have had about 5 sessions of this already. I have also now got special floss and a floss threader.. and I am spending about half an hour doing this in the evening and as much time as I can in the morning..

Plus she gave me Meridol toothpaste and Mouthwash which I am using religiously now..

I did neglect my teeth for a long time due to the fact I was terrified of dentists as I had bad experiences in my teens when a dentist took 7 of my teeth out..

I hope it works out for you.

When you say "the dentist today" do you mean the English one? Does that mean the Hungarian dentist hadn't mentioned anything about smoking and gum disease?

    Have you now stopped smoking?

My dentist and hygienist told me to use one of those electric toothbrushes, I chose a Braun, it has been great. The whole family have one now.

My hygieniest also told me to use a Braun. I bought the new one with a little wireless screen which tells you if you are being too brutal or not covering all areas! It was about £140 but I got it for just over £60 - Boots have an offer at the moment on half price for it.

But as toothsmith has said, the best thing you could do for your teeth and gums is pack up smoking. My new dentist virtually told me Id be wasting my money on a lot of cosmetic work if I didnt pack up smoking as it would so badly damage not only my teeth work but my gums. That was enough for me, my doctor had also urged me to pack up for other reasons. I was smoking over 20 a day for 4 decades. I packed up slowly over 3 weeks and it wasnt easy and I still have an urge, particularly first thing in the morning BUT its now nearly 2 years since my last fag. Ive saved over £3k which more than paid for all my cosmetic dentistry plus lots of other treats like Radley bags! You should really download a program called silkquit which tells you daily how many cigs you havent smoked, how much money you have saved and how much in theory you have lengthened your life.

When I went for my last dental check up, the dentist was very pleased with the results of the cosmetic work. I said to him I was still not smoking and he replied he already knew that because my gums were so healthy now and there were no stains on my teeth plus - he couldnt smell any smoke on me!!

Give it up now before the wedding :)
  • Thank you hethmar, I really am going to try .. I am going to Germany at the end of November with my Mum, I don't smoke around her as she hates smoking.. so that will give me a really good start. So as from November 29th I am going to try to quit :)

Just to let you know about my tooth, its been stuck back in now and touch wood its still there :) I managed to get back to work for the first time yesterday with the brace, and people were so kind to me :) I was dreading people taking the mickey..
