London to Glasgow return by train

Hi - I need to make frequent return trips to Glasgow leaving on Thurs or Fri late afternoon/eve and coming back Sunday. I much prefer the train but find I can't find anything cheaper than £40 per ticket each way. :confused:

I've heard about fare splitting but don't know where to start! I am quite happy to change trains, etc it it would mean cutting the cost of the journey.

My next trip is leaving Thurs 4th December around 5pm from London, returning Sun 7th Dec some time in the afternoon (I'm pretty flexible on this) does anyone have any ideas? It would be much appreciated. :beer:

  • The key is to book early, if you do then the price one way is £12 use this website to help you get cheap ticket when released;

    I'll keep looking at a split ticket for you but think for the 4th you might have to get the expensive ticket, but start planning now for all you future trips and buy those cheap advanced tickets they don't last long before their all sold out. i'm travelling from Edinburgh to n.wales over new year and as soon as i bought my tickets two days later the advance tickets on that train sold out

    Thanks for this Lakeuk but where did you find the £35.15 return - that sounds slightly better? Thanks for helping me out :beer:
  • Hi, sorry I had no luck in splitting the ticket, Sundays are always busy, however, you could fly;
    London Gatwick to Glasgow 4th Dec 14.35 £24.99 Easyjet
    Glasgow to London Gatwick 7th Dec 21.25 £21.99 Easyjet

    There are other flights average price £29.99 if someboby could drop you off/pick you up at Gatwick then that would save you money else you will have to get a rail ticket into London. These Easyjet price have no insurance and no hold baggage options so travel lite

    Plus Glasgow Airport is either a taxi or bus (or collection), no trains at Glasgow airport.

    u may as well fly for that price...
  • We have in the past found good deals at the ticket office in Central Station, buying in advance was the key, our returns Glas- Lon was £36 each, had we bought them the day before it would have been £28 but no-one could manage into town on that day. It's worth a phone call to your local station.
