Canon Powershot A620 - can't upload pictures

We have a Canon Powershot A620 which has worked well until tonight.
When trying to upload the pictures to the computer we are getting a message "cannot detect camera, try again".
We've removed the lead, tried it in a different USB slot, removed it from the camera, put it back again, still no joy.
Anyone had this? Anyone any ideas?

get a usb card reader, only a few quid.0

Lead must be faulty, surprising as we've only had the camera about 18 months. Borrowed son's lead and it worked OK. Thanks for reply.0
