Hubby Goes To Market

We went to a market near eldest DD on Sunday, (we never do this at home). I have just priced up what we bought on mysupermarket, Asda chepest at 25.80, Tesco 27.71, we spent just under 16 pounds.I used to live in St Albans and loved the market there, I used to go at the end when they sold off carrier bags full of veg for £1.
We loved St Alban's market too, near MIL, so we went often. We rarely visit the area now she's gone, usually only make an occasional flying visit to SIL who still lives there, it's such a pity when family are so far spread out that there isn't time to see everyone as often as we like.

So true, we all live miles away from our families these days, and it's really hard when there's a family crisis. Friends are very important these days.

I went to the market last week and picked up some veg for a very good price (can't remember exactly) and have been at Aldi and Lidl this week too. I plan to go back to the market as I agree that it is cheaper there but you can not faulter Aldi or Lidl as there offers are very good. 39p for veg at moLove a charity shop bargain0

I always go to our local market on a Saturday morning for our fruit and veg. It sounds like some markets don't have such good quality stuff as mine - I find it tastes better and lasts longer than the stuff I buy at the supermarket. I usually spend between £7-£10 a week for a family of four which is subjective as not everyone eats the same amount of fruit/veg as we do. Last week we had plums, satsumas, carrots, bananas, apples, potatoes, cauli and broccoli for just over £6. It helps if you buy seasonal produce.
I must admit I like the chat that comes with shopping - we know our grocers name and we have a bit of friendly chat on Saturday morning. A few weeks ago I found I was about £1 short when I came to payand he just said "don't worry, give it to me next week". There are definite advantages to market shopping!:rotfl:

I bought some from Netto a while ago, and the bananas tasted like real bananas - so fresh and tasty, like I hadn't tasted in years.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

we don't have a market locally - the nearest place is birmingham and that would either cost car parking and fuel or bus fare. And tbh I don't think i could cope with trailing the kids round brum on a saturday to get some cheaper veg - think it would cost a lot more in the long run.
Aldi has just opened by us.... will be taking a look in there when i get the chance
I miss the market tho - when i used to live at my old house we had a fab market, and loads of good, reasonably priced butchers too.:rotfl:five children? I must be mad........ :rotfl:

I always go to Lidl for my fruit and veg, its so much cheaper and is fresh. My market wasnt that cheap when I tried it and they only did basic stuff, I am vegetarian and therefore like my veg and want more than just carrots and brocolli.
Lidl is great but i have learnt not to go on wednesday as its market day and everyone parks at lidl and also pops in there so tend to get left with scabby stuff.0 -
If the OP can get to Newcastle under Lyme's market on a wednesday or fri there are 2 or 3 very good veg stalls. I suggest the ones outside woolies and dunelm. Much better value then Hanley market. (Hanley market is a permenant indoor market so they don't reduce their goods very often).
