Hubby Goes To Market

Market definitely cheaper, even at full prices. If you go late, there are bargains but they've sold out of a lot of the stuff I like. Today, there was purple sprouting broccoli at £1 a pound. When I walked past on the way home at 10.15am, it was all gone.
Before we moved, the market was four miles away. Now it's round the corner and a short walk with a wallytrolley. That's also an important consideration.0 -
I bought, for just under £10:
a bag of onions
1kg carrots
Cantaloupe melon
2 bananas
10 pears
6 apples
2 large grapefruit
1 large cabbage
250g runner beans
250g giant mushrooms
Bag of potatoes
A pumpkin
4 lemons
broccoli
from tesco.
At our market the prices are an awful lot higher unless you go at the end of the day when they're selling things off. But these items go off so quickly. At the farmers market the veg lasts for weeks but the list above would cost around £18 from there.
We don't have a aldi nearby but when we did go to lidl I found everything was more expensive than tesco so I wouldn't bother going again.0 -

We're lucky because our market fruit and veg is good quality, albeit a bit muddier, and cheaper than Tesco. I only buy the end-of-day bargains when I know I'll use them quickly. In the summer, I regularly got four punnets of strawberries for £1 that we had that evening, or big bags of plums that wouldn't keep but fine for jam or wine.0 -
I went to my local market last Saturday and got;
6lbs spuds
cabbage
4lb carrots
10 peaches
2lb sprouts
1lb mushrooms
1lb onions
2lb apples
Came in at just under £5 - I love my local market :-)I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead

Hello, thanks everybody, for reading this thread.
I will keep you informed, next week we'll try and stick to the same again.
There are some things I'll have to get next week as I already have in, but will be low on apples, carrots, peppers and maybe other stuff.
But I'll list that seperately so we can judge what's the best value all round.
I have to say, that cabbage he got is one to be proud of, it's humungous!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

abel and cole are great their mixed fruit and veg medium box is £15.95 delivered and has 7 veg and 3 fruit there is loads in there yes ok you do need to wash it but i do this when i get home from work (it gets left on my doorstep) and then store it in fridge or fruit bowl.
if anyone is interested i have a code for a free box of the above if you spend £15 (they sell meat, dairy, cleaning stuff, cupboard ess, etc), you need to place first order by end oct. PM if you want it as dont think allowed to post codes on here.0 -
I used to go to my local market about 3.30 or 4pm and grab a few bags of stuff for £1 each. I remember one day I got a massive bag for £1 which had potatoes, leeks, carrots, cabbage, parsnips & sprouts in!
I now work in the east end, loads of good value markets but its just a bit much to bring it all home!Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0 -
