home videos to dvd?

Hi, we rediscovered our family home videos and want to put them onto dvd. Trouble is, some of them are really jumpy - the sound is good but the visual is all over the place on some of them. A couple of tapes are fine though. Is there a way of rescuing them before trying to copy them onto dvd? Will playing them on a different vhs player make them work better? The videos are about 8 years old, so not ancient - yet lol.
A friend of mine is lending us a dvd recorder, I am assuming that we can link up the video and record from that? Has anyone else done this? If so, any advice? I really don't want to lose these clips.
Thanks

Do you have the option to adjust the tracking on your video player?
I have an old machine which lets me do this and a newer one which doesn't so worth looking0 -
Thanks for your reply!
It auto tracks and theres no function to do it manually. Might have a look at everyone elses vhs players to see if i can get them to play better.0 -
MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to the Techie board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

I got better results using an all-in-one VHS+DVD recorder. If they are precious VHS tapes it might be worth investing in one of those as you will want the best quality you can get, but try it with your friends recorder first.
Remember to 'finalise' the discs when you've finished (read the manual on how to do this) or they won't play on any other DVD player - only the one they were recorded on.0
