VW Golf making loud bang when put into reverse

as the title suggests, my hubby went to drive to work, put his p reg golf into reverse and *BANG*

clutch could be worn, gearbox could be on its way out.

thanks for the suggestions, i think it's likely the clutch or the gearbox both of which are going to be painful and if its either likely to mean we need to get a tow truck out to get it to the garage to fix it. !!!!!! :mad: :mad:

If you mean it isnt running at all and wont restart...how about snapped cambelt?
Yuo can check simply by slipping off the timing belt cover. If it isnt there than clutch oyur head in your hands and weep with dispair. It will be bad....very bad £££££0 -
