Electronic scale reducer

At our annual boiler service/inspection it was recommended we have an electronic scale reducer installed to reduce limescale buildup in the central heating and hot water system. British Gas will charge us £150 incl VAT to do this. Has anyone had this done and how much did it cost? And do you think it's necessary?
