Knocking noise from above...any thoughts?

I live in a block of flats which were converted from a textile warehouse about 8 years ago. Ever since moving in, there have been what I can only discribe as knocking noises that sound like they are coming from the ceiling or flat above. I'm in the 4th floor of 6. The 5th and 6th floors were additions when the building was converted.
Any builders got any ideas what it might be? The only thing I can think is it may be the pipes...?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
Hug

could be the heating pipes moving when getting hot.
or water hammer, which is due to water pressure changes.
