laptop faulty - insurance runs out soon....odd comments from comet

my daughters laptop has been nothing but trouble since we bought it - it is a pavilion zv6115ea and cost £600 in november 05.....various faults have been keys snapping off - getting too hot and overheating...and the main one is where the adaptor plug keeps splitting where you put the jack into the laptop....in my opinion it is because it is getting too hot again and causing the wire to melt and split....they are now having me take it in again and they are going to look into why i have had 3 adaptors since i bought the machine.....

we have 2 other laptops and a pc in the house and have no problems (touch wood) so its not down to misuse by us....

now luckily it is insured but when i phoned to report the fault at first the guy i was speaking to said 'do you realise your insurance is running out on 28th of next month so there isnt much we could do because if it takes too long your insurance will have run out before we get it back to you?????' plus you have already had 2 other replacements and a couple of faults repaired so you have definitely had your money worth....

erm i said - but that obviously shows the laptop is inferior because of all the faults and surely it doesnt matter how many times you use the insurance?

once i told the guy i would be renewing the insurance and already have the forms he started to process it...

but - i would love to know now - surely it is about time they really sorted me out right with this machine - surely it shouldntve broke so many times?

thanks

As an aside does the insurance cover accidental damage? If not then presumably you're getting nothing more than your statutory consumer rights anyway from it. How much is the insurance? At this stage (not to mention probably wasn't worth paying for anyway, you don't need insurance or a warranty to get faults sorted out by the retailer) you may be far better off economically putting the money towards a better current laptop.

what are my statutory consumer rights now after all this time? bought 29.11.05...the insurance cost £100 for a year and does include accidental damage....

surely one laptop shouldnt break so many times?

    thanks

No it shouldn't and at this stage I'd be asking for a replacement since the repairs obviously aren't sufficient. My earlier comment probably applies more in hindsight. Up until now every time you had it repaired, they were obligated to anyway under the Sale of Goods Act, so the insurance doesn't come into it. So that's £300 that could have been put to other things or halfway to a laptop upgrade instead of increasing the overall cost of the 1st laptop by 50%. The only benefit seems to be accidental damage but considering the huge depreciation in computer equipment I still don't think renewing the insurance to end up getting a laptop presently worth far less than £600 is worth it for that cost. In fact that £300 on insurance could have bought you a brand new laptop with much better specs than the one you're paying the insurance for. So it's a bit of a false economy. I'd certainly argue the toss with them over the poor history and try and get it actually replaced rather than repaired again. But I just don't see the benefit personally in insurance/extended warranties like those.

I would save your money regarding extended warranties.
Put the money asied in a savings account.
Your laptop would be insured against accidental damage if you have this on your household insurance.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

The fact that you are makeing the claim on the insurance policy before it expires should make any difference to them not being able to return it to you before or after it expires you insured the laptop against faults, repairs and accidental damage for a full 12 month or 36 months not 11/35 months so anything that crops up in the insured period should be covered as long as it is reported within the period.

And stop paying for the insurance and put the money towards another laptop or even a desktop. You being an adult will look after your laptop, your child its a different matter, it will get put down on un even surfaces and the charging connector will get knocked which puts strain on the solder points inside it. used on soft surfaces that block air vents and cause over heating the dust builds up inside. adult owned laptops fail but child owned laptops break a lot quicker and unfortunatly most of them are the cheaper £300-£400 aptops that just are not up to the knocking they get from kids.

thanks for all your comments....i would just like to say i didnt make it clear but my daughter is 20 lol...and fortunately we are from a family who look after things and dont bang things about and that - we are careful with our products thank be to god lol....

i actually feel cheated after paying all this extra to insurance but i never thought about the specs and that......

so - who do i approach now about having the laptop replaced rather than repaired? wont they argue that at this time it isnt actually faulty and it is just the plug adapter that need replacing?

    thanks all for your help...
  • Dear magoogy

    1. Stop flapping about with more insurance. Get what you have paid for.
    2. What do you want?
    3. Is it faulty / broken or just needs a little power plug fixed and some TLC?
    4. Its nearly 2009, get a new one.

gee thanks total - you sound so patronising......

i did say it was just the plug but they have insisted that i take the whole blooming machine in - i know myself it is just the plug but they wont have it - think it could be getting too hot at back and thus causing the plug to split......

the reason i take insurance is because at £10 a month that is a better prospect than the thing breaking and i cannot afford to just fork out £250 for another machine........i dont feel £10 a month as much as i would feel no laptop ........and as for saving the money when you have a family im afraid that is easier said than done - an emergency comes and you know that the money you saved for your laptop looks so inviting that you use it.....or a rainy day comes and you are bored and you use it......i suppose total you will say i need to practice some selfwill....

whats 2009 got to do with anything and yes of course i can just go out and buy a new one - just like that - easy done....oh am skint cant...

thanks to the others for their help...
  • Mr magoogy Sorry sometimes it reads like that --- would not know how to be patronising on purpose, maybe I do it all the time but not knowing about it. Just trying to put a list together of a few short lines to itemise what you already know or have been offered advice on.
It still reads like you a going to carry on regardless in your way. I for one have some tools and would take the laptop apart, buy a part socket and fix it in.
You are under the impression someone owes you a new laptop. Have it repaired by HP (??) that's why you have insurance. It 3yrs old soon, sell it and get a new one for 2009.
