    So far I've found its best if I can borrow the tools I need first so I can try them out and get a feel for what things are important to me before actually buying one - at least with the more expensive items. There's nothing worse than buying something then wishing you'd bought the next model up or a different model altogether once you've used it once or twice. But I take your point!

    The workmate will come in handy, but i have found a couple of decent quick release clamps are well worth the investment. Go for ones you can release with one hand and tighten with one hand too (like a trigger action). They really free up your hands and you can use these to quickly clamp the wood to the workmate when you have akward lengths or positions. Ideally wider the better as you will be surprised how wide you want them to go sometimes (mine are never enough). Good for gluing and many other things.

    you can get a free workmate off freecycle.
    i got a new one given to me last year so i put my very old rusty workmate on freecycle. it went within 24 hrs.
    a pair of clamps is a good idea, as they always come in handy.
    try the pound shop for really cheaps ones.
    Get some gorm.
