hi hope everyone is looking forward to christmas
i download tv programs from net and need to be able to play these i beieve you need a pbs compatible player
now what i am looking for is a dvd player that will play everything, divx, xvid etc.. also what i would prefer as well is a dvd player which when i have more money i can connect it to some speakers and a sub, so would like surround sound
it has to be around the £50, so i am looking for some advise, eg what people have bought experience they have had, good picture quality.
so please help as many recommendations as possible

Depends how much you value a trusted brand, and exactly what features you need.
You can get an unbranded (Probably a rebadged lite on or similar) DVD player with DIVX, and a 5.1 decoder for £39.99. you could possibly get a simliar model from ASDA/Tesco if you shop around.

If you'd prefer a branded player, amazon have a phillips machine, that has good support for Divx, for £56. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00096J3HG/ref=br_lf_ce_4/203-0263972-0211122
(This one does not have a decoder, so when you upgrade you'll need to buy a proper receiver and amp instead of just a cheap amplified speakers set. But the improvement in quality should be worth it!)All my views are my monkey's views. I give advice on behalf of my pet monkey and do I give banana related advice. All my posts are my monkey's opinion and no-one else's.0 -
Just to add... One of the best place to look for reviews of Divx players is http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers/All my views are my monkey's views. I give advice on behalf of my pet monkey and do I give banana related advice. All my posts are my monkey's opinion and no-one else's.0

not really bothered about a branded name, i always find it best to go on reviews from what people have got and are using
i mean the main one is divx playback so i can watch the tv shows0 -
https://www.aria.co.uk usually have the Crystal DIVX player for around £35 on super special. I can vouch for this model as I have had one for a year now without incident.
I would be interested in picking one up (other brand) in a supermarket though if anyone knows of any good deals?0 -
We got ours from tesco!! Brand name is Phillips...not sure of model sorry
but it was £49.99! It plays CDr DVDr etc
All the info was written on the box if that helps lol0 -
Have you seen this one?

Speical Reserve has just closed
Well I only just found out!
They had amazing prices on there! There was a Mulit Region, XVID, DIVX, loads of Formats, built in USB Posrt, Card Reader, Picture Viewing etc, with upgradeable firmware via the internet for like £46. I was gona get one, but I can;t now0 -
As no one mentioned packed bitstream (pbs) support for the players above, I thought it may be useful to dig up some of my previous posts regarding xvid support in DVD players:

In short, I recommend the Yamada 6700 which can still be bought for about £40. The only thing missing is an spdif out. But it does have a coax optical.
If you can get hold of a Targa (the £20 one that Lidl sold last month), even better, as it is every bit as good as the Yamada, but also has the bonus of memory card slots.0 -
I go with the previous poster. I have a Yamada 6700 and it has played just about everything I have thrown at it. The only things I haven't been able to play have also been unplayable on the PC. Definitely recommended. And the bottom line is, it's only £40, so if you don't like it, get a different one. I work with people who have also bought the same player. One chap has even bought 2 for different members of his family. You can't argue with that.0
