Maternity Leave - "Keeping in Touch" days

If you work more than your 10 KIT days (and get paid for them!) they can't pay you Maternity Pay for that week (although if she is a professional, the amount of pay would probably be more than SMP anyway?)
I would recommend calling ACAS (http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1461), as she may have a case to take them to a tribunal, if this was not made clear to her in good time.
