Management Qualifications

Hi
My sister has been in a management position for years, she worked her way up and has a very good job as a first line manager now. She has no formal qualifications in managment though. We were talking and she was telling me she would like to do some training to gain the qualifications to back up her experince on her Cv should she ever need to change jobs (she is hoping she won't have to but you never know).
She is looking at maybe NVQ's but I was wondering if something like a qualification in Management from the OU would hold more weight than an NVQ? Also if she went with NVQs what level is best? She actually does have a level 2 (I forgot til I was typing) which was done by a company who came into her work and it was just collating info etc and very easy she said.
So after all the waffle my question is what qualification hold more weight in Management please?
Thanks

I recommend courses offered by the institute of leadership and management their website is here http://www.i-l-m.com/0

Contact the Institute P ersonnel and Development and find out what courses they accredit-this is the key organisation for management qualifications. The OU lep/counselling lines are also very helpful. I would be wary of colleges these days-there are a lot of courses out there that aren't worth much-there's a line between NVQ and GNVQ.The key to the value of any course is its accreditation-be wary of this.
Employers also sometimes fund courses or give support with time off etc0 -
Management course are likely to start at level 3 and most colleges will insist that you start at this level even with masses of experience. By contrast, OU courses are level 4 and can be started immediately. Don't expect unbiased advice from colleges as they'll always tell you that their qualification is the best!0

I would also recommend the ILM courses - very comprehensive and designed for those people in-service.

Thanks I will pass all the info on to my sister.
No one has really commented on what they think of the value of NVQs anyone any opinions?
Thanks0 -
Some ILM courses are NVQ and they are highly reccomended thou some people prefer diplomas.0

CIPD is particularly for people who work in HR and it's very difficult to achieve any of their qualifications unless the role has a large HR specific element. Their courses are also very expensive.
ILM is good, run some very sound courses, but I'm not sure they are well enough known. You do get letters after your name though!
OU is excellent, and the tutorials and seminars are great for networking. Can be pricey, but you can spread the payments and they accept Tesco points.
NVQs? I've found a very mixed reaction to them. Good idea in principle, the practice hasn't worked very well which has led to them not being viewed as particularly valuable. I'm honestly not sure the management ones are worth pursuing, particularly as an individual. If it's a well supported company scheme then that's different.0 -
Thanks all. Maybe she will look into OU as she would like the idea of your clubcard deals I think.
Thanks again0 -

No I agree but I did say maybe she would 'look into' it as money is a consideration but I know that she wouldn't go with it if it wasn't suitable. She won't rush into anything hence why I asked for advice on this site coz she wants to get the qualifications right to match her experience.0
