Yet another virus problem!

Hi
Hubby was searching the web yesterday for new games to play and managed to get a virus despite having avast up and running. I ran Malwarebytes anti-malware and it cleared about 22 trojans etc! The desktop is still affected though - it's showing all the programme icons but on a background of multicoloured squares. I've tried to clear this but can't alter the display settings and although I've tried to go back to a restore point prior to the infection this also appears to be disabled both in normal and safe modes. I just get a message saying nothing can be altered! Any further ideas gratefully received!

Might I suggest getting a decent virus scanner, and stop wasting time, energy and possibly money on piddly free software?

I very highly recommend ESET's NOD32 (link), and personally use it myself.

In the meantime, run ESET's online virus scanner (link) - although I've not used it before, I hope it helps clear up this mess you're in.

Might be wise to uninstall AVAST before running the online scan, and before installing NOD32.

  • give comobofix a go - details here.

The programme is free and very powerful.

ComboFix is a program, created by sUBs, that scans your computer for known malware...
It clearly states it scans for malware, and not viruses.

  • And the infection given sound like a smitfraud infection which Combofix targets.

Worst case scenario is that it provides me with a list of files that a registry script can tackle.

If the op would like a safer option then please try Kaspersky - this does not remove files but should highlight those that are bad.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
    • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
    • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
    • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thanks for the links but have to say that the 'piddly free software' has worked on this computer without a problem for about 3 years now! I blame hubby for the dodgy games sites rather than the software! ;)

personally stick with what you have but make sure you update the software you have eg firewall, AV, malware and spyware if you have one

    Do you use a firewall?

  • Have windows defender and i think the router has a firewall anyway. I tend to use my laptop more than the desktop so not over sure what's on that! I know I've got the scan suggested running at the minute and when I was shutting other virus software down before I started I also found something called mcAfee guardian which I didn't know was on it! They're probably all conflicting with each other! But.............as I said we've not had a problem with it before

I don't. NOD32 comes up with a big red box in the middle of the screen when a dodgy website tries to infect my PC and it terminates the connections to that website. Something that non of the free ones do. The paid versions of some of the free ones do this but not the free version.
