Is Electricity usage more expensive than Gas usage?

Depends on the house, I suppose. When we moved into our present house, there was a gas fire in the front room and one in the kitchen. We had plug in heaters that we moved from room to room. We were only ever warm when near a heater and we couldn't afford to run them all we needed to.
Now we have gas CH and using about 80kwh a day to heat the whole house, hot water and cooking. In the summer, we used 26kwh a day so I think 54kwh for heating is about right. That's about £2 a day. Heating on an hour in the morning and six hours at night on average, set between 16deg and 21deg0 -
Well, dont radiators take ages to heat up? We have the heating on one hour a day at the moment because we have to to stop the pipes freezing, but I cant notice if the radiator is on or not for that hour, my room is still jst as cold.
If you can't feel the heat in your radiator within minutes, there is a problem with the central heating system! If it is not rectified, you are just simply wasting gas! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Freezing pipes or burst radiators was one of the reasons i went all electric, don't have that problem, also boiler packed in a couple of years ago and was going to cost in the thousands to replace. My whole house electric bill (not economy 7 as I don't have it) comes in at £80 a month all year.0

I am looking at buying a place at the moment and have seen a place that is, relatively, cheap. Only problem is that it is all electric. Electric cookers and heating. Know from general knowledge that electric is more expensive than gas, however, am extremely tempted to take the plunge, buy the place and deal with more expensive energy bills...or potentially look, in the future as I cannot afford it now, into installing GCH. Any thoughts? Its a two bedroom flat on the fourth floor - which is the top floor.0

It largely depends on the insulation in the flat and how long you spend in the flat each day. e.g. out at work.
In very round figures electricity is about 3 times the cost of gas.
However electricity is 100% efficient and a gas boiler much less efficient. Also you need to factor in the cost of gas servicing.
So probably electrical heating(and hot water) costs about twice that of gas.
So a ballpark figure might be that electricity would cost about £400 pa more than gas. - but that figure could be a long way out.0 -
get youself a 10" cast iron dutch oven and use that on gas for most things ie frying, casseroles etc it uses the tiniest amount of heat ie on the absolute lowest and the pan heats up very very quickly and stays hot for ages and being black it also provides warmth to the kitchen. This has to be the cheapest way to cook.
ps it is heavy and you need to keep it seasoned and not use soap. Mine is utterly brilliant0 -
I think the answer depends on what boiler you have.
Mine is hideous probably 50% efficient and I have to have it turned on for 20 minutes even just to wash the dishes, if I use gas water heating for a month it is generally more expensive than using electric.
In regards to heating I reckon its the same, my gas central heating doesnt make the house feel that warm and heats up rooms I am not in, whilst I could use a small heater just in the room I am in probably for less, iether not cheap but electric the cheaper.
Where gas wins is in hobs on cooker, gas heats up very fast and well, my electric hob takes a few minutes to get to temperature so is wasting power. Also if a modern boiler that is able to heat water within seconds you turn the hot tap on, those seem very efficient cost wise.0
