does been on DLA give any other entitlements

Hi im on DLA and just read about the cinema card and just wondered if there is anything else than been on DLA entitles you to as I have not been on it long

Comments

  • I've only recently been awarded DLA so still looking into this too but one thing I'm getting improving energy efficiency in the home with loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. It's warm front who do it and I qualify for the full amount to cover the cost of this.

I think you can get a slight reduction on your utility bills too but I've not rang about mine yet. If I think of anymore I'll add them later.
  • Your partner or another person who helps look after you can claim Carers Allowance.

You could also get a disability premium on Income Support.

Warm Front heating stuff, as has already been mentioned. (although see other threads on here in the DIY boards)

This page has some more bits, including:
    • Free car tax
    • Disabled persons railcard, and Bus passes.
    • Reduction in council tax if you have had any adaptations made.
    • Zero VAT on products specifically designed to help with disabilities.

this thread is interesting! to qualify, do you have to be getting the higher rate of DLA or doesnt it matter?? i get the lower rate of both parts, and also get pension credit.

You have to get high rate mobility for some things. Blue Badge and free car tax for high rate. Motability car if you prefer, but you give up the mobility part of your money.
Disabled rail card is for anyone on DLA, but you have to pay for i. Free bus pass for mobility part.
Cinema card costs £5 for three years. Blue badge holders also get concessions or free tolls (like Dartford Tunnel or Severn Bridge) but sometimes it's not the badge, but the car.
You can also get a warm front grant for loft and cavity wall insulation.

  • If you get the higher rate of mobility you may be entitled to a grant for drving lessons from motabiliy.

    http://www.motability.co.uk/main.cfm?type=CDRL

when I applied I got 52 lessons fully paid for, that was a couple of years ago. If you are not up to driving I think a carer can get a grant for half the cost.

'Motability will only consider applications for help with the cost of driving lessons from people who are either currently a customer or intend to be a customer when they have passed their driving test. Customers can also apply for help towards the cost of driving lessons for a nominated driver or carer if the customer is unable to drive; only one person per Motability customer can normally be helped with the cost of driving lessons. To our knowledge this is the only scheme available to help with the cost of driving lessons.'

NB: I am not aware of any obligation to actually sign up to motabilty once you have had your lessons. I might be wrong on that score but I don't think they can actualy tie you in.

I've got a blue badge but I didn't get HRM (even though I expected to), I've also got a disabled bus pass, which was free.

Septemberblues, I didn't mean you can't get a Blue Badge if you don't get HRM. Sorry! You can get one with a doctors letter. What I meant was, you AUTOMATICALLY qualify for one if you get HRM.
    Hope that clears it up!
