I've tried getting my female dog used to noises, she's a rescue dog though, and been through a lot.
Consequently she's scared of lots of things, newspaper ( I can imagine why), loud noises, flys - I think that's because when there was a fly in the room I picked up a newspaper and rolled it up :o - she's scared of loads.

Thank you for everyone's responses. I had planned to bring my little boy in on fireworks night but like many areas, round here fireworks night seems to go on for about two weeks! I have a hutch cover so I'll use that and also fill the roof of the hutch with straw in the hope that it will keep a bit more of the noise out.

Awww....bless. Wee soul - yes I can imagine why she is scared of the paper too :(

I am getting 2 rescue dogs on Saturday (5 sleeps to go!!!) but luckily they haven't been mis-treated. Quite the opposite in fact as they were owned by an elderly lady who is sadly dying and can't look after them but were very well looked after but as I say, I am not sure how they are going to react to the fireworks. And I better put Max the bunny on top of the kitchen table just in case one of the doggies goes investigating!!!!:D

Last year my cat was fine with the fireworks, last night was ok as there weren't that many (snow must be quite novel for Diwali over here!?) - but today I put on his harness to let him go out in the snow, and he was terrified of the huge amounts falling off the trees - the sudden loud noise, and seeing it. He was shaking so much, and it wasn't the cold - his brother was happily sitting in it too.

Had to take him back indoors, where he promptly retched - poor thing. I'm now dreading more fireworks incase of more adverse reactions; I'm going to have to get one of those feliway plugs - there's a dog one too. :)
  • At some health food shops you can buy pet homeopathic medicines for a variety of problems, some of you might find this silly but i used to work in a health store and people were amazed at how well they worked!

i had the plug ins plus the collar last year. they did not work in calming my dog and they were expensive

It can also help to feed a dog a meal high in carbohydrate before a known event (not easy when they go off randomly in the weeks leading up to Nov 5th) as this helps them to sleep.

Too late now, but sound desentisation CD's can be very effective if you work hard to make the bangs linked with something good, like the throw of a ball or a piece of yummy food.

Please think carefully about the use of drugs, although rarely used these days, so vets still use sedatives which leave the animal mentally alert, but unable to move, so it's very hard to tell if they are actually stressed or not - makes the owner feel better, but is very hard on the dog...
my vet only give the drugs as a last resort. much better in my experience for both me and the dog,she suffered fits. its only for a couple of nights and i am with her all the time she is sedated
  • Rescue remedy is good its just herbal based and can be brought from the chemist .
It just calms animals down and you can even use it yourself . I have lol
Just add a few drops to their water .
    It really does work

I have to take my dog out in the car at around 5.30pm and come back around 9.30-10. He gets so scared and shakes otherwise. The problem is, fireworks are nt just on bonfire night anymore, it seems it goes on for about a week either side...Drives him and me nuts.
