Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

MEW = Mortgage Equity Withdrawal. It's when people have used the equity in their home (as a result of rising house price) to raise a loan against it. This money could be used for almost anything but the bitterness is surrounding people who 'chose' to borrow against the equity in their home to fund luxuries (new car/holiday etc).

You may also come across STR, which is Sell To Rent. People who have sold their house and decided to rent instead. Mainly people who felt that prices would eventually drop so got out of the property maket quick and chose to rent. Any proceeds from the sale is locked away in savings/investments. They will probably buy when they feel the market is at the bottom.

HPI could mean House Price Increase(s) or House Price Index

HIP means Home Information Pack - a pack supplied when selling a house incorporating searches, energy report, etc.

HPI is usually "house price inflation"
MEW is "mortgage equity withdrawal", or borrowing more than the original mortgage to pay off other debts / buy stuff / start a business
HIP is the thing you now need when selling, which includes energy certificates and all that malarkey
    STR is "selling to rent"

Thanks for the explanation. I must admit these acronyms have been baffling to me.
