Declaring points on car insurance for additional driver

If my ex who is insured to drive my car (wasn't ex at time insurance taken out and not removed him as hadn't really thought about it got more pressing issues to deal with) has subsquently picked up I believe 6 points through 2 offences on his driving licence (one of which he misinformed me about - read it in the local newspaper today that he got 3 points!), do I need to tell my insurance company that he has them even though he's not driving my car?

    Just remove him?

If you leave him on he is likely to cost you more anayway as he is no longer you partner.

I had thought of that after reading the paper today but because he had more years driving than I did he brought my preminums down.

I certainly wasn't going to keep him on points or not once it came up for renewal in Feb.

Yes you need to tell them if he's a named driver.

I'd just take him off anyway. Think if I was to put a randomly named person on my insurance who did not drive the car, just to get the quote down - that would be considered insurance fraud. You'd have to pay more with his points anyway I imagine.

i hadn't randomly put him on there. At the tme I took the insurance out he was my husband and he sometimes did drive the car which was why I added him to my insurance as well as bringing the premiums down. ( I was also on his car insurance too because I drove his car.) Sorry if I didn't make that clear, I certainly was not trying to commit insuance fraud.

but yes I'll get him off the insurance promptly.
  • surely if hes not driving the car any more you could just leave him on there until renewal time, if you hadnt of read the paper you would not of known about the points

...but the OP has seen the paper, and as stated above is technically defrauding the insurance company. It would certainly count against them if a claim were required, and probably invalidate it. Not worth the risk, just take the ex off the policy.

  • Taken him off now - just paid an admin fee to do it.

And no I'm sure if I hadn't read the paper he would lead me to believe he had 'got away with it'!
