Mistakes in Internet banking transfers?

This is posted in another thread, but I thought this might be a better place?
When you transfer via online banking, what happens if you get the account no (an invalid one for example) or sort code wrong? How do you ever trace the lost transfer?
I only ask as Coventry BS ask you to use the LAST 8 digits of your account number when internet banking (not the first) and making a first payment I didn't know whether to use my own name in the Barclays 'who to pay' box or Coventry BS followed by sort code and account no.
I thought there was a lot of opportunity for mistakes and some large amounts involved and wondered what happens when things go wrong!
TIA

Once you send something it is gone for good unless the number you try and send it to is invalid in which case it will bounce back.
As bank transfers, initiated by the sender cannot be recalled they are the preferred method of payment for ebay sellers, although of course most buyers prefer not to use them for that self same reason!
When sending a new payment if you are not 100% sure of the information then don't do it, send a cheque to the person instead. The system is pretty simple thouygh, all you need is the 6 digit sort code and the 8 digit account number, no need to muck about with last or first numbers it is the actual 8 digit account number you must use. As for references it doesn't matter as that is for your convenience, the name of the person you are sending it to doesn't figure at all.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. If in doubt send £1 and wait until you can verify it's hit the receiving account timeously. Then you use the same stored data (bill payment) from your account for larger payments - and they can't go wrong.
Always use ant pull DD facility on the receiving account in preference to BACS transfers. Not only are they foolproof in terms of the data - they're interest neutral as well. So you don't lose interest whilst the transaction is en route. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

I have a Coventry BS account and their account numbers are, in fact, 9 digits. In their "Guide to operating your account" leaflet under the Transferring from another bank/building society section they do actually state to use "The last 8 digits of your 9-figure account number"
Don't know why they have to be different0 -
I have a query re logging into Coventry BS.
On the security details form, which I filled in an returned last week, I had to choose a password and then three memorable words. The letter from them stated that there would be no further correspondence re these details and to wait 4/5 days before trying to login for the first time.
Thought I'd have a go at logging in but the first stage asks for....
Never enter your full password when you login. We will only ever ask you for random characters from your password.
Please enter the following details
Web ID
* *
Date of birth
1990 * * * huh, if only
What is the Web ID supposed to be?
I only have my password and three memorable words. It can't be password as stated above.0 -
With most banks it's either your userid (eg your name) which you will have specified when setting up or your e-mail address. Your account number is another possibility.0

I have a Coventry account. You will have received a letter which states "I have enclosed a form for you to set up your Security Details........." which are the details used to identify you when phoning or using online services. It sounds as though you have returned this.
A few days after they have received this you will receive a letter which states "Thank you for adding online services to your account. Your Web ID is shown below....."
The Web ID will be eight lower case letters, e.g. abcdefgh. That is what you have to enter when you log on, then it goes on to other security details.
If you haven't received this Web ID after a few days I'd give them a ring. I always use 0246 655 5255 instead of the 0845 number.
Hope that helps.0 -

I've just asked them about this. After you receive your security details, you have to ring them to get a Web ID.

Thank you TomsMom & vigman.
Coventry shouldn't have stated 'Please not we will not acknowledge receipt of your Security Details Instructions' in their letter.
Doesn't take a lot to confuse me these days.;)
I will give them a ring, as I haven't received anything since sending in the form at the bottom of Your Security Details letter.0 -
After I was given payment details by a friend I sent 50quid to his account. He contacted me to say he had not received it.
Investigating showed he'd given me the wrong account number by one digit.
He contacted his bank with my account details and the account number into which it had actually been paid and his bank moved the money into his account from the orignal recipient.
Neither of us know if that person was ever contacted.
His bank never spoke to me nor vice versa.0
