Holiday Robbery

Options
I am holiday at the mo in Gran Canaria, and have been robbed of everything and i mean everything. They have taken the safe deposit box off the wall!!
We were staying in appartments and we are insured with the Halifax on a yearly policy.
I called them yesterday to inform them of what has happened and they have said to me that they will only pay out fully if i can provide receipts for all that has gone,if not it´s 50% only. Who keeps receipts for clothes that are over 8 weeks old?? You wash it twice and no holes or rips appear in it so yu bin the receipt or is it me??
Is there any other insurer we can use next time or are we stuck with these idiots??

We've just claimed on our travel insurance for a stolen bag. It contained shoes, baby monitor, sun lotion, first aid kit, washbag.... loads of bits and pieces but it all added up to a couple of hundred quid.

We reported it to the rep, gave her a list of the stolen stuff and when we got back we contacted our insurers.

Natwest wrote to us saying that they needed a police report and wanted receipts for everything so my husband phoned them up and blasted them for being so stupid. Like you say, who keeps receipts for everything and what would Spanish police do about a bag of shower gel and sandals?

We received a cheque the following week.

What I'm saying is that you can argue with them that nobody would keep receipts for every single item they took on holiday.
Just run, run and keep on running!

  • What does it say in the policy wording about paying out 50% if no receipts ??? - if it does, your stuck with it, if it doesn't - what does it say ??
  • I have receipts for almost everything I have ever purchased. I also purchase everything on my credit card so I have proof of purchase incase I lose the receipts. I also have digital photographs of valuable items and their receipts. I also have made a video of my whole house and all of its contents incase everything is destroyed, It would be difficult to remember every single item that you own. Maybe I am too cautious.

We havent got the policy yet!!
We booked the cancellation because we had to see legal people over here due to purchasing a property. We then realised that morning that we flew our travel insurance had lapsed and we needed to get some quickly. We have all our financial business with the Halifax and as they do insurance thought that they would be good to use quickly and that we would not be had over, how wrong can you get!!!

Our bill will be about 1700 quid!! Don´t think they will just roll over for that one. The travel reps Thomson´s aren´t worth a carrot neither. They expected us to stay in the same complex because we had only booked a cheap cancelation deal and pay 25 quid each for the replacement tickets to fly back and pay 68€ each for an emergency passport to get us home!!!!Another tour company said we dont need to do that and told me exactly how to get around it and we are not even their customers, the attitude is ´well your covered on your insurance to claim it all back´Will not be using them again!!
The thieving B*****DS took all my Lacoste gear and left me with a pair of Nike jogging bottoms and a t-shirt.
As well as my PDA,driving licence, passports, flight tickets, camera, keys for house, car and office.I would like to meet them in a dark alley, they wouldnt walk out of it!

I have had to claim on travel insurance twice over the years.
The bit that infuriated me was they slapped the excess (£35) onto each individual item......so got nothing for a bag containing loads of things none worth over £35 individually.
  • it happened, and there is nothing you cna do about it now... apart from focusing your energy onto the stupid travel insurer...

We had a bad experience in Barcelona... my partner got his digital camera stolen on the street (the old trick of slashing the leash passing by)... we reported it to the police (thx to my basic spanish) got a report for it, fought for 3 months with our travel insurance and OH finally got a good payment for it... all in all the cost of replacing his camera with a brand new more advanced one only costed him 75 pounds.

they are !!!!!! who will try anything to discourage you from claiming... just keep on hanging there and make their life heel
