Do I need planning permission?

Basically this has all started due to a washing machine!
I live in a pre-fab and attached to the side of my house there are outbuildings to the left and right of my back door, ie old coal sheds on the left and outside toilet on the right.
Would I need pp if I were to use the same volume as these buildings but make different shapes because at the mo the sheds are long and thinnish and my outside loo I would like to make into a shower room ( just a thought for when my sons are older and fighting over the bathroom), so this would need taking out a little. I then thought that the ex sheds could become a utility room but I would prefer it to be in line with the shower room.
Does this make sense and if so what do I need to do re pp?

Be on the safe side and ask your local council, there are general guidelines that if the new building does not exceed 10% of the original footprint then PP is not required, however some authorities take this to be the main building and others take it to include original lean to's.

You may be able to extend under permitted development rights, as it sounds like the extensions you have in mind are quite small. What type of house is it (detached, semi, terrace?) - you can extend up to certain distances from the rear and side walls, depending on what type of house it is and where it is located. Are you in a National Park, AONB or conservation area? the presence of the existing outbuildings has no bearing on whether you need to apply for planning permission for an extension - it's either permitted development in its own right, or it isn't!0
