Hi,
My girlfriend and I have just bought our first house and are moving in a couple of weeks. We're currently in a rented house with pre-payment meters for gas & electric. With this in mind, I'd like some advice on choosing supplier when we've moved in.
Do we have to start an account with the current supplier for the new house and switch later on, or are we free to choose who supplies our energy from the word go?
If we have to use the current supplier to begin with and then switch, will there be a minimum period that we have to use the current supplier for?
If we are able to choose the supplier, could someone recommend the best way to find out who will be the cheapest supplier? As we're on a pre-pay meter at the moment, we don't have any bills to refer to in order to find out average usage etc, which the switching websites seem to use in order to calculate the cheapest provider.
Any advice would be welcome.

Doesn't the meter provide you with some previous usage info? If you insert the payment method (card/key etc) it will display additional info. Although this relates to the previous occupants it could be helpful?
You should be free to switch. Some LL's say you can't without their permission but there's no way they can easily find out anyway.
You can switch from the existing supplier at any time.0 -
When you move into your new home, you will need to register with the existing supplier at that property so that you have an account with them.
Once that is confirmed as set up (should be almost instant) you could look to switch supplier if you want. The switch will typically take 4-6 weeks to take place."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
