U.S. Road Trip: Travel Insurance and Car Hire Insurance

Hi There,
Myself and my fiance are leaving London after 3 years to head back to our home in Australia via a 3 week road trip across the U.S. in December.... the question has now come up about travel insurance:
1) Is it worth finding a travel insurance company that also covers us for car rental or should we take out car insurance seperatly with the rental company?
2) Should we get single or multi trip cover? We've heard that for the U.S. it can be cheaper to get multi trip...
